Mapping: Casa Batlló Contemporary announces Joanie Lemercier, Juliette Bibasse, and Maria Arnal as the artists for the 2027 edition

In January 2027, French artistic duo Joanie Lemercier and Juliette Bibasse will present a monumental new projection mapping, transforming the iconic façade of Gaudí’s Casa Batlló. For the first time, the spectacle will be accompanied by a live performance by Catalan artist Maria Arnal, one of the most innovative voices in contemporary music in Spain, who is co-creating a unique composition for the artwork.

Now in its sixth year, Casa Batlló’s façade mapping has become a major, free public event in the city of Barcelona. The mapping will be unveiled on 30 and 31 January 2027 every 30 minutes from 7:30 p.m until 10:30 p.m. The event forms part of the closing programme of Gaudí Year 2026.

On 30 and 31 January 2027, Casa Batlló’s façade will once again draw audiences with its annual mapping event, which, after five years, has established itself as one of the top audiovisual spectacles in the world.

For its sixth edition, Casa Batlló will present a brand-new site-specific artwork by French artistic duo Joanie Lemercier and Juliette Bibasse in collaboration with Catalan artist, singer and composer Maria Arnal. Together, the three artists will create an immersive light spectacle, deeply rooted in the natural world that inspired Gaudi’s architecture, featuring a bespoke soundtrack and live performance by Arnal.

Casa Batlló’s annual mapping is a public and free artistic initiative that invites renowned artists to use the iconic façade as a canvas and develop an exclusive new work inspired by Gaudi’s creative universe. Past artists include Refik Anadol, Sofia Crespo, Quayola and United Visual Artists.

Joanie Lemercier and Juliette Bibasse
Based in Brussels, Joanie Lemercier and Juliette Bibasse have been working at the intersection of light, space, nature, mathematics and technology for more than fifteen years. Their practice primarily uses projection and programming to alter our perception of space and transform surfaces through light. Their studio is built around a creative collaboration in which Joanie Lemercier contributes his artistic research into light, geometry and perception, while Juliette Bibasse contributes her experience in artistic direction, production and curatorial practice. Since 2013, they have developed a complementary artistic partnership, creating installations and exhibitions across a wide range of scales and international contexts.

Joanie Lemercier is one of the pioneers of architectural video mapping. In 2006, he co-founded the AntiVJ collective, which contributed to the development of architectural projection as an artistic language, and collaborated with artists such as Jay-Z, Flying Lotus and Adrian Utley of Portishead. Deeply inspired by nature, Lemercier spends extended periods immersed in landscapes, observing their forms, rhythms and structures. These experiences inform a practice that brings together light and technology to explore new ways of perceiving the natural world.

Maria Arnal
The project will come together in collaboration with Catalan artist Maria Arnal, whose sound and vocal research will be integrated into the artwork. She will co-create the musical composition for the new mapping and participate in the vocal creation and live performance. One of the most exciting vocal artists in Spain, she often combines her role as a songwriter—merging electronics, avant-pop, and traditional polyphonic music—with projects that explore sound, technology, and art. Arnal has developed an artistic practice in which the voice engages in dialogue with technology, sound experimentation and artificial intelligence.

Casa Batlló Contemporary
The mapping forms part of Casa Batlló Contemporary, an artistic program which invites creators from different disciplines to develop works conceived specifically for the building and to explore the relationships between heritage, contemporary creation, technology and public space. Since its first edition in 2022, the Casa Batlló mapping has evolved into one of the main strands of Casa Batlló Contemporary’s artistic programme and a major meeting point for digital art, architecture and public space.

Each edition is based on the same premise: inviting an artist to freely engage with Antoni Gaudí’s legacy and use the façade not merely as a projection surface, but as part of a new creation conceived specifically for it. Across its various editions, artists have established radically different dialogues with Casa Batlló’s architecture, incorporating languages such as data and artificial intelligence, generative creation, moving image, light, sound and even dance.

The mapping once again counts on ISE and the ISE Foundation as principal sponsors. As part of this collaboration, Lemercier and Bibasse will participate in Spark, ISE’s event dedicated to the intersection between creativity and technology, which will take place on 3 and 4 February 2027 at Fira Montjuïc in Barcelona.
